Artist Statement

My paintings, drawings and ceramic works reflect a sense to time and place, light and shadow, detail and form. I work in an incremental process that focuses both on detail and the whole. Using photo and sketch reference, each piece is carefully rendered through direct observational drawing, and painting as well as traditional gridding techniques. Each image is adjusted and conveys my impressions and remembrance of the subject.

My current work focuses my personal connections with the image. These images explore man’s impact on nature as well as the reclamation power of nature itself. I feel a connection to remains of dwellings, walls, and structures built by hand with simple tools; structures that are now being reclaimed by nature. I am interested in the remains of past lives that people discard or, in some cases, preserve. I expect my work to evolve as I become more closely focused on color, texture and abstraction.
