We are all instinctually, on a primal level, finding our way through our own abstract territories of experience. We move around, navigate and track our lives, and in this way we make meaning for ourselves. These paintings are inspired by that journey visualized.
Time and space are visualized and veiled through layering, scraping, and fusing of the translucent and opaque wax and pigment. The encaustic medium lends itself to representing inchoate lived experience. While the artist might influence certain aspects of the work, there are other forces shaping the final image: heat, cold, gravity, the drift of the wax, the passing of time as it hardens and dries. As in life, we can control only so much. What remains is subject to chance, happy coincidence, chaos, and luck. It is less a case of creating a painting than guiding one into being.
I am inspired by life’s limitless capacity to offer us choices for how we live it, and how I live directly impacts how I paint. My work evolves as I ferret out what creative choices I have for gathering elements in a painting. This process has allowed me to embark on an exploration into the collective unconscious of archetypal metaphor and the understanding of life and it’s passing.
